DENTAL CARIES

  • The dental plaque is a layer that consists mostly of bacteria and is formed on the teeth and the limits of the gum mainly

  • Caries are a process that destroys teeth. This process is due to the existence of acids, which are produced by the interaction of dental plaque bacteria and food sugars

  • In the first phase, what causes acids is the loss of salts and especially Ca ++ calcium ions from the enamel (the hard tooth casing). The enamel at the points of loss turns into a white porous spot

  • In the second phase of the caries, while the loss of calcium ions is continued due to the factors mentioned above and which persist, a hole is created in the enamel and the damage proceeds to the dentin (the soft yellow layer under the enamel casing) The tooth becomes sensitive to sour-sweet and hot-cold

  • In the third phase the caries proceed to the tooth pulp (surrounded by the dentin and contains the nerves and blood vessels) and is infected. Pains become persistent and intense

    • In the last phase, the entire extent of the pulp is infected, infecting the nerve and causing inflammation. The nerve is dead and there is a possibility of abscess formation

At this last stage the extraction of the tooth from the dentist is considered necessary

However, the dentist may intervene in earlier stages with occlusion or endodontic treatment (denervation)

Above all, however, with proper oral hygiene, you gain control of the caries.

The factors that may increase dental caries are as follows:

  • Poor oral hygiene

  • Dental Caries in active phase

  • Abuse of drugs or alcohol

  • Lack of regular care

  • Orthodontic treatment combined with poor oral hygiene

  • Reduced flow of saliva, which causes dry mouth

  • Bad nutrition

  • High levels of microbes of dental caries in the mouth

  • Damage to tooth enamel

  • Discovered radical teeth surfaces

GINGIVITIS

● Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums. When the gums swell, they blush and bleed with brushing. They are a result of the body’s defense response to the growth of bacteria and the acids they produce

● Swelling allows bacteria to penetrate between the teeth and the gums

● Sub-plaque is then formed that can lead to more severe gum disease, periodontitis

● Over time, while the inflammation is prolonged, the periodontal fibres that hold the gum around the teeth are destroyed. Thus, a pocket around the teeth is created, exposing the dentine around the root region

● With the effect of toxins, the periodontal tissues, which are responsible for holding the teeth in place, and the (alveolar) bone, are now destroyed

● Finally, the teeth show intense mobility, resulting in detachment from their pocket. For this reason, dental surgery must be done in the early stages

TEETH GRINDING (Bruxism)

Many times we grid or clench our teeth unconsciously during the day or night when we feel tension, anxiety

When seen, it can often cause jaw disease, headaches and problems in the teeth

Symptoms :

  • Obvious tooth chipped

  • Increased sensitivity

  • Worn tooth enamel

  • Pain in the jaw or tension in the jaw muscles

  • Earache due to intense of the tooth pressure

  • Light morning headache

  • Damaged tissue inside the cheek

  • Chronic face pain

  • Ask your partner if they wake up at night because you are wearing

Causes :
● Anxiety, stress or tension
● Repressed anger or frustration
● Aggressive, competitive or overactive personality
● As a reaction to earache

Treatment :
● Stress management
● Dental approach: special dental splint – mouth guards
● Special exercises
● Administration of sleep relaxants
● Decrease alcohol, coffee, cigarette
