Jewelry in the oral cavity has a high risk. Tel Aviv University researchers have found many reasons to believe that piercing in the oral cavity can cause perforation of tongue or lips. Dr. Liran Levin, a dentist in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation, Tel Aviv University School of Dentistry, in collaboration with Dr. Yehuda and Dr. Zadik Dr. Tal Becker, found that about 15% to 20% of adolescents with mouth piercings have others at high risk for tooth fractures and gum disease, which can even lead to tooth loss later in life.

High rates of fractures due to piercings do not exist in other age groups.

The initial study was performed on 400 young adults aged 18 to 19 years and the results were published in the American Dental Journal in late 2007, based on research in multiple centers in America and around the world.

The survey showed that 10% of all New York teens have some piercings, compared with about 20% in Israel and 3.4% in Finland. Dr. Levin warns teens to think twice before having a piercing, as it can easily lead to health complications and in some (rare) cases, even death.

“There is a recurring wound in the gum area,” says Dr. Levin. “You can see these young men and women playing with the piercing of the tongue or the lips. This operation prolongs the trauma to the mouth and in many cases is a harbinger of the loss of the front tooth “.

Dr. Levin notes that young people who chose to have a piercing were very concerned about their body image, but seemed to know the future of these dangers that piercing can cause.

Practical Tips for teens and parents:

Ultimately, the best advice for teens is to “try and avoid piercing their mouths,” says Dr. Zadik. If the adolescent is persistent, then it is essential that tools and equipment be completely sterile so as to help reduce infection.

After the procedure, the area should be rinsed regularly with chlorhexidine for two weeks. Then avoid playing with the piercing and cleaning it on a regular basis, as well as having regular dental checkups.

As long as parents can prevent teens from getting pierced, the “thank you” will be great.
