British researchers at the Dental Institute of Leeds are expected to bring revolution to dentistry. Two new pioneering methods will actually displace the “classic” toothbrush: They have created an oral solution against the dental plaque, which by means of a special, strong, white light color destroys the harmful bacteria. Prof. Kirkham says he could help patients who cannot or will not use the toothbrush properly. It is hoped that it will be available on the market in three years.
At the same time, they made a “repair” mouthwash, which strengthens the body to develop new enamel, thus avoiding the unwanted wheel and fillings. The “repair solution” is achieved by a protein that encourages the formation of new enamel over tiny holes in the teeth. The substance is placed on the tooth, enters the hole and creates a scaffold, so as to attract the required calcium. Prof. Kirkham claims that it could help patients with early caries, patients with tiny holes in their teeth where they have discomfort when consuming hot or cold foods or drinks. It is hoped that it will be available on the market in five years.
These innovations will not eliminate the need for a dental service, as teeth with more damage will need to be treated in the conventional way.
